Ward Trucking Selects Rivetek and Spacenet to Provide High Speed Internet and VPN Access to their 18 Service Center Locations

When Ward Trucking needed a connection backup solution for their 18 frame relay connected business locations—the company selected Rivetek Connections. Situation
Ward Trucking Company is a 73 year old privately held company that provides freight and logistic services to customers in 11 Eastern states.
Ward Trucking has 18 service center locations with over 1500 employees. They are recognized for their commitment to serving the customer first. To best accomplish that commitment their internal systems have been built to support a standardization of work practices across all 18 service centers, allowing them to focus on measurement of quality in low claims and on-time service percentage.
Business Challenge
To ensure business continuity and quality at all 18 service center locations Ward Trucking’s Telecommunication’s manager went looking for an affordable, “business-grade”, secure and high speed Internet connection as backup to their existing terrestrial-based connection services. They had tried other frame backup up solutions including ISDN and cable but had limited success.
All 18 locations rely on their high speed connections to connect to Ward Trucking’s mail and Intranet applications, including their driver dispatching system which must be available to them 24x7.
Technical Requirements
In selecting the backup connection solution for their 18 service center locations, Ward Trucking had several critical requirements. They needed “business grade” connection reliability. They also needed connections that were secure. They also were seeking a partner who would understand their existing network and back office solutions running on the iSeries platform.
Solution
Ward Trucking thought Satellite would be a good option for back up so went searching for providers. They started researching Satellite providers and found Rivetek, with iSeries experience as well. They contacted Spacenet* in the fall of 2003 who also directed them to Rivetek as a channel partner for Connexstar products and services. They selected Rivetek because of their many years of VSAT, network, and iSeries experience and because they have delivered iSeries applications VPN over VSAT successfully to over 100 locations.
Ward Trucking determined the Rivetek solution matched their need for a low-cost, reliable, secure VPN Internet connection that would enable their 18 service center locations to access Ward Trucking Intranet applications, databases and mail in the event of a frame failure.

Rivetek provided the pre-installation coordination, hardware ordering and configuring. Spacenet, installed the location dish equipment and provides the data transport from the location to the hub facility. Rivetek provided the location network equipment, and provides network monitoring. The traffic is backhauled over a VPN to the Ward Trucking network.
Rivetek assisted the locations in connecting their computer equipment to the supplied Cisco router, which in turn routes traffic through the satellite.
Rivetek provides 24x7 network monitoring and notification. They also provide support via phone, email and web form. Rivetek also assists Ward Trucking in conducting a monthly failover test to ensure that the VSAT and frame relay connections are seamless. Rivetek provides Ward Trucking with a portal view of their sites to monitor their status during the install period and beyond.
